River Mincio and the “Ciclopista del Sole” cycle route
The Mincio river flows in a complex landscape, marking a line along the lower Garda area, reflecting the history and transformation of this territory. The closure in 1966 of the railway that followed in part the river gave way to the natural transformation of the territory, and the transformation of the railway track into a cycling path. Inaugurated in the year 2000, the Ciclopista del Sole is part of the EuroVelo 7 route and every year it welcomes visitors from all over the world. An increasing number of people enjoy rural, cultural and sustainable tourism and visit this extraordinary area to discover the culture, landscape, food and wine in a “slow” way.
Activities
You will be spoilt for choice! If you love cycling all you have to do is choose which type of bike you prefer to ride along the cycle path or in the hills; for those who love horse riding, the area offers beautiful routes. Water lovers can hire a SUP, canoe or kayak and enjoy exploring the river. The river Mincio offers challenges to recreational fishing enthusiasts; it is in fact used for competitions organised by the Italian recreational fishing and diving association.
Territory for all tastes
The territory lies on a regional border with a rich historical heritage (just to name a few, the Visconti bridge in Valeggio, the Scaliger castles, the Sigurtà park and villa, the sites of the Italian Wars of Independence such as Custoza and Solferino) and exceptionally beautiful landscape. It is close to the UNESCO transnational serial World Heritage site of The Venetian Works of Defence between 16th and 17th Centuries, of which Peschiera is part, where memory and authenticity are combined with a harmonious development of the territory, which has solid roots in local history. The beautiful city of Mantua with its lakes and Bertone and Bosco Fontana parks provides lovely itineraries.
